| Rosarito Ensenada Ride 2006!
So twice a year every year for the past 27 years, there's an organized 50 mile bike ride from Rosarito Beach to Ensenada in Mexico. Decided to do it this spring with Morris and Andy (there's another one in september, let me know if you're interested!).
The ride was a lot of fun. Approximately 6,000 riders made the trip down to Rosarito in the early morning of Saturday April 22nd to see if they could make it all the way down to Ensenada on their bikes with little more than ass-padded shorts and water bottles. There's so many riders that once the ride has started, it takes a full hour for the last person in line to cross the start line! The route follows the coastline for the first 25 miles or so along the nice beaches of baja mexico, after which the ride route turns inland towards a huge infamous hill which is apparently called 'El Tigre' by the local townspeople. (thats tiger right? well watever it is, it didn't sound good). Everyone talked about this crazy ass hill... 7.5% grade uphill for 2 miles, 800 foot elevation, blah blah blah... to which i said 'El Bringo It Ono!' (totally thought i was gonna die btw). After the inland parts, the course turns back towards the coast and follows it until you ride into Ensenada like a champ to the enthusiastic cheers of throngs of random ass Mexican people watching from the side of the road. Once you get to Ensenada, there's a huge Fiesta party where 10,000 people gather to eat tacos, drink dos equis, and basically just have a great time. Anyway... here's some pics from the trip:
Here's the basic course map. Notice the humungous mountain thing in the bottom elevation map.
Unloading our bikes from the trailer. We took a chartered bus that handled all of our transportation including bikes so it was nicely convenient.
My bike and Andy's bike getting ready for the ride
As you can see, Andy kinda went all out including the biking ass shorts
 Getting the bikes ready
Quick pic after a huge Mexican breakfast, which strangely tasted exactly like the Mexican dinner I had the night before
Here they come! We totally just cut and merged in front of the start line
That says 0.45 miles... just starting out
Very crowded for the first few miles
Just a random ass Mexican metal dinosaur
Me and Andy. Andy looking really really happy about something. Maybe it was the shorts
Eventually the crowd thinned out, and the weather was awesome
Nice scenic views of the beaches along the ride
Two of Moe's coworkers, Sri and Erik at the first rest stop
 Turning inland and heading uphill
Don't even know how long this hill part took... just put my head down and pedalled my ass off
Cool pic of a tandem bike and some small local villages in the hills
Rest Stop!! these were packed with people, and Papas and Beer gave out fruit and water. Luckily they didn't have beer, because I probably would have been stupid enough to have 1 or 2 or 6
 Me and Moe
Moe looking very um... aroused... after that long climb
Moe needed a helmet so me and andy just picked him up a random helmet at Sports Chalet on the way to Mexico. Turns out we bought him the Skeletor helmet without even knowing. Seriously couldn't help cracking up every time I was riding behind him. who the hell makes a helmet like that??? hahahah
gah! More climbing!! some of these pics turned out well despite the fact I was taking these totally blindly while riding one handed uphill trying not to die. Lots of people just got off their bikes at this point and just walked them up the hill. We later found out that some guy had a heart attack on this hill part, and the airvac chopper couldn't get there in time so he died. yikes.
Finally taking a rest at the top... all downhill from here...
Andy coasting to the finish. Lookin good in those shorts big boy
Coasting towards Ensenada on the main road with a lane blocked off just for the bikers. These Mexican people in the cars would shout really random stuff , and for the most part everyone was really cool and cheering for us.
Check out that view! I think we took a left here
Finish line! Da heck does META mean? I guessed it meant Finish
Moe arriving at the finish still looking very... aroused. He blamed the shirt, we totally weren't buying it.
Exactly 50 miles on the trip odometer
Heading into the huge fiesta party. Didn't take many pics of that... but basically just sitting around and drinking and eating a LOT. Worked up quite an appetite.
Last pic, back at the hotel waiting for Moe and Andy while they figure out how to use the elevator.
So this trip was a ton of fun. Saw some cool stuff and met some cool people. Made me want to do more organized rides, but only if they have fried shrimp tacos and bacon wrapped hot dogs waiting for me at the finish. oohhhhhhhh sooooo gooooooood. Viva la Mehico
